"Richard" is a multifaceted project that delves deeply into themes of power, control, and societal expectations, all encapsulated within the surreal and absurdist framework of a giant handmade soft sculpture. The choice to create a giant man not only captures attention but also serves as a striking visual representation of the dominance and influence of patriarchal structures in our society. The scale of the sculpture magnifies this influence, highlighting the overwhelming presence of these norms and expectations in our lives. By externalizing Richard as the embodiment of these societal pressures, I’m reclaiming agency and confronting the expectations placed upon women. This act of externalization allows for a separation between the individual and the oppressive forces they face, enabling a clearer understanding and critique of these dynamics. The project evolved from a critique of individuals like Richard to a broader commentary on societal norms and the shared experiences of being marginalized or oppressed. It suggests a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, both for myself and potentially for the audience as well. Humor and satire play crucial roles in breaking down barriers and inviting viewers into the conversation. By infusing my work with elements of humor, I’m attempting to disarm and engage audiences who might otherwise be resistant to challenging societal norms. Satire, in particular, can serve as a mirror, reflecting back the absurdities and contradictions inherent in our social structures, prompting viewers to reconsider their own perspectives and biases. By challenging expectations and subverting traditional narratives, "Richard" aims to spark thought-provoking conversations about gender, identity, and the complexities of navigating societal norms. |
